There are countless options when it comes to choosing the right countertop for your kitchen remodel. Adding a new countertop can change the entire look of your kitchen without launching a large scale renovation.
Choice of Textile
Material choice can greatly alter the total cost of a countertop installation. Some of the most common countertop materials are: Marble, Granite, Quartz/Mixed Stone, Wood/Butcher Block, Ceramic Tile, and Laminate, among others. Marble and stainless steel rate as the most expensive per foot. Engineered stone and quartz slabs are a less expensive option that can mimic styles similar to marble that is stronger and scratch resistant. Laminate is typically the least expensive option, is stain resistant, and offers a variety of colors and patterns.
Need Something Kid-Friendly?
Some countertops are softer & more porous, meaning they may scratch or stain easier than others. Marble can be scratched and may be etched by acids like citrus or coffee. Granite is much stronger and therefore won’t scratch. If Granite is sealed properly, it is both heat, stain, and water-resistant. Stainless steel is durable yet noisier than some other countertops and has a tendency to show fingerprints. Wood or butcher clock can easily be stained and scratched, but is great for a large prep space. Concrete is both strong and scratch-resistant, but tot avoid stains it’s important to seal from time to time.
What’s Your Corner Style?
The edges of your countertop can entirely change the look of your counter space. A common kitchen countertop edge is a square style like Eased, Miter, or Caesarstone. Many choose this cut as it has a ninety-degree edge for easy cleaning and chopping. Another popular countertop edge is bullnose or beveled, which is slightly rounded and softens the edge. There are several tapered options which are commonly seen in granite and marble tops.

When you choose a counter, keep in mind how it will look in combination with your cabinets. Lighter areas look bigger but will sometimes stain more easily, unlike dark materials that can hide imperfections more easily but can shrink a kitchen.
